Most people are of the opinion that junk food addiction is simply a problem with person’s priorities. More often than not, they see it as something that an individual can easily break out of. As most researchers will say however, food addiction is akin to smoking addiction wherein it will take an extensive program to get a person to stop. Typically, this type of love for food stems from more than just basic hunger. For those who want to learn how to stop a food addiction, following are some tips that may prove helpful.
Avoid Food Triggers
There are specific food types that start the eating binge. It could be chocolate, junk food or even carbonated drinks. Pay very close attention to these triggers. The goal is to make sure that these triggers are not eaten during the course of the day. By avoiding the main cause of binge eating, individuals will have a better chance of stopping the addiction.
Every Day is the First Day
Treat every day as if it was the first day of the stop-addiction program. See, most people make the mistake of “rewarding” themselves after successfully staving addiction for a month or so. What happens is that by rewarding themselves, they are likely triggering another avalanche of food addiction. Another common problem is when people fall off the track and start eating lots of food. The next day, they think that their efforts are wasted and do not bother to continue the program. DO NOT DO THIS. If one fails, shrug it off and continue with the program the very next day.
It also helps to take careful note of the foods that are being eaten on a daily basis. By writing them down, individuals become more aware of what they are eating, therefore triggering a conscious effort to stop. In order to end food addiction it’s important to get to the core of the matter. Some studies show the addiction to food basically comes down to emotional eating. This is when individuals feel bad about something and try to stave off the feeling with food. If this is the cause of the addiction, addressing the underlying problem is usually best. Have a friend come over and talk this through or volunteer to be part of a group.
